Solar water systems can:
- Provide 70% of your annual hot water supply for more than 30 years
- Result in automated installations with no end-user intervention
- Mount as solar collectors on roofs, on walls or within gardens
- Utilise indirect systems with no potential scale or frost damage issues
- Be systems designed with T*SOL software to show outputs and savings
You can see examples of our installations in our website gallery, or you can read the testimonials of our many previously satisfied customers.
What are Solar Water Heating and Thermal Hot Water Systems?
Innovative solar heating controllers continually compare the temperatures of solar collectors, which our engineers usually position on the roof of a property, against water temperatures in the bottom of the solar hot water cylinder. If a solar collector has a warmer temperature than the bottom of a solar cylinder, the solar controller will then activate the circulating pump of solar hot water systems or thermal hot water systems to compensate.
A solar grade anti-freeze is circulated through the solar collectors, moving the heat to the exchanger. This heats water inside the solar cylinder in much the same way as a traditional central heating boiler installation.
Between May to October, renewable energies can account for up to 95% of your solar hot water coverage in any domestic or commercial setting.
Outside of this period, you should still expect an installation to generate hot water on clear or cloudy days. Expect averages of 90% to 100% during the summer, 50% to 60% in the spring and autumn, and 25% to 35% during winter.
Sizing Solar Water Heating and Thermal Hot Water Systems
The size of the solar collector area, and that of the solar cylinder, must relate to the number of people using hot water in a property. Domestically, you should expect solar hot water systems and thermal hot water systems to create 70% of your household’s hot water based on these flat plate sizes:
- 4m² collector area and 200L cylinder for 1 to 2 individuals
- 5m² collector area and 300L cylinder for 2 to 4 individuals
- 7.5m² collector area and 400L cylinder for 3 to 5 individuals
- 7.5m² collector area and 500L cylinder for 4 to 5 individuals
- 10m² collector area and 500L cylinder for 5 to 7 individuals
- 12.5m² collector area and 750L cylinder for 8 to 2 individuals
- 15m² collector area and 1,000L cylinder for 12 to 20 individuals
Please note that the collector area on installations with direct and heat pipe vacuum tubes is slightly smaller but the capacity of the cylinder remains the same. It is always advisable to fit the largest solar hot water systems and thermal hot water systems possible to benefit from an increased supply.
If you plan to use our domestic and commercial solar heating engineers for installations in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, South London or West London, or across the UK, we look forward to meeting you and to telling you more about the many benefits that come from choosing renewable energy specialists.
